The Deconstructive Theatre Project's multimedia play, The Orpheus Variations, is being remounted with live musicians at HERE Arts. Each performance is followed by a talkback with the actors and designers. The Sunday matinee is at 4pm.

I am working alongside Artistic Director and choreographer, Robert Gardner, to create a multi-movement work for string quarter and live electronics. The commission is underwritten by the American Composers Forum's Live Music for Dance Minnesota program in partnership with NewMusicUSA, with funds provided by the McKnight Foundation and the Andrew W. The Orpheus Variations, produced by the Deconstructive Theatre Project, re-imagines the classic myth of Orpheus and Eurydice in the Underworld as the tale of a transcendent sound-maker struck mute by the suicide of his lover. The Orpheus Variations is a live film created in immediate time that deconstructs the classic myth from the inside out by colliding the grand narratives of Greek tragedy with the private internal narratives of modernist literature, poetry, and film. The performance is an investigation into the neurological behaviors of memory and artistic perception and of process as performance. Tickets are $30 and include attendance at the after-performance party each evening.

“Some Call Refuge” brings contemporary song cycles by three young American composers (Ryan Homsey, Michael Ippolito, and Eric Lemmon) together with art songs by David Lang and Barbara Monk Feldman, weaving poetry by Akhmatova, Blok, Longfellow, Poe, and others into an evening of intimate and intense music-theater.

A swirl in the air where your head once was. “Some Call Refuge” is a miniature “kitchenette verismo” drama for three anonymous figures, drifting in and out of a shared space, staging the transience and shiftlessness of modern desire and despair, betrayal and boredom. Featuring the superb vocal talents of Kelvin Chan (baritone), Joélle Harvey (soprano), Kate Maroney (mezzo-soprano) and piano accompaniment by Peiharn Chen and Kyle Meng. Staging by R. B. Schlather, dramaturgy by Joseph Cermatori.

An hour-long two-hander, The Beard brings beat poet Michael McClure's keen, vicious language to the theater. In a velvet-draped purgatory, American icons Jean Harlow and Billy the Kid confront their larger-than-life personas and all-too-human sexuality. Forty-five years after its premiere caused riots, and ten years after its last New York appearance, The Beard arrives in Brooklyn this June.
